The Secure Sockets Layer is the standard for secure data transmission over the Internet which chenillefabric was created by Netscape. One problem with communicating sensitive information over the Internet is that almost every connection between two computers over a network involves many intermediate steps. Secure Sockets Layer uses a form of encryption called public-key encryption to encrypt and decrypt transmitted data. Unlike secret-key encryption systems a public-key system uses pairs of keys. One key called the public key is used to encrypt messages while the other called the private key is used to decrypt messages. To encrypt a message to someone you must use their public key then that person will use their private key to decrypt it. You can make your public key available to anyone without compromising security because the only way to decrypt the message is with your private key. All of this goes on behind the scenes.
